Ballard High girls log dramatic win at Bothell, 3-2. Playing their
first away game of the season, The Ballard girls trailed 2-0 at the end
of the first inning due to a ringing double off the bat of Bothell's
clean-up hitter. However, the Beavers hung tough defensively and inched
back with one run mid-game via an opposite field double by first baseman
Leslie Ellingsen that scored third baseman Hallie Hemmingsen to make it
2-1 Cougars.
With both teams getting good pitching and defense, the Beavers still
trailed 2-1 entering their last at bat in the top of the 7th inning, but
the momentum was about to turn. Shortstop Lindsay Ohm led off with a
sharp single up the middle to get the tying run on base. Center fielder
Trisha Perrin next delivered a line drive into the right center field
gap for a game tying triple that delivered the lead run to third base
with no one out. That brought up pitcher Kristin Anderson who
immediately lined a sharp single past a diving Cougar second baseman
that scored the Beaver's go ahead run, making it 3-2 Ballard. Bothell
regrouped to end Ballard's half of the inning, but now trailed 3-2.
The bottom of the 7th started off in promising fashion for Bothell as
their first batter reached first on a solid single to left. The next
batter advanced the runner into scoring position at second base with a
sacrifice bunt. With pressure on both sides to execute, Ballard
prevailed, with third baseman Hallie Hemmingsen making a nice fielding
play and throw to first base to end the game.
